Beyond Energy Savings: Optimal Health with Passive Solar Home Design

Creating healthier, more energy-efficient indoor spaces has been top of mind for many of us, so when we had the opportunity to chat with architect John Spears of the Sustainable Design Group, we jumped at the opportunity!

We toured one of his recent projects and learned about passive solar design, grid-independent homes, and more!

Although I already had some familiarity with passive solar design concepts and basic building science principles, I hadn't really made the connection between designing for energy efficiency and designing for health. When done in a thoughtful way, they are one in the same!

Our health, and by extension all of our fitness and physique goals are dependent on fresh air and sunlight. So many people suffer from depression, low energy, and compromised immune systems, and they are often led by their medical providers and peers to seek solutions through pharmaceuticals and nutritional supplementation, without first addressing their basic human needs (sunlight, fresh air, water, nutritious foods).

It only makes sense that the design of our indoor environments, whether they are places that we sleep, work, shop, or socialize, will have a major impact on our long-term health and vitality.

Thanks for watching!

I used to recommend using a “rotational diet” with the goal of increasing the nutrient diversity of one’s diet, as well as helping to prevent the development of food sensitivities which may arise from overeating certain foods. Using this template, foods (particularly protein sources) are rotated on a 5-7 day cycle, so that a food
